Major Online Disruption Hits Dozens Sites and Apps

A widespread web outage has impacted dozens online platforms and apps globally, as users experiencing problems connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure service.

The disrupted platforms encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping site and the Ring security doorbell company.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of issues using the HMRC website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users used networks to state their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on specific applications totaled the thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the issue began in the east coast of the America at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides essential web backbone for a host of companies, who utilize space on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive cloud computing platform.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the America (8am BST), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and slowdowns” for AWS services in a zone on the east coast of the America. The widespread consequence was seen to affect platforms worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, further indicated a rise in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances located in the state of Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the issues began.
